Q

What is fractional distillation

A

When the fractional column works. The heated crude oil is piped in at the bottom. The oil evaporates and rises up the column. The temp decreases the higher up you get, so at different levels, depending on boiling and melting points, different substances are produced at different levels

Q

What is the process of cracking

A
  1. Heat the long-chain hydrocarbon to turn it into a gas
  2. Vapour is passed over a powdered catalyst at a temp of 400-700 C
  3. The catalyst is aluminium oxide
  4. The long-chain molecules crack on the surface of the catalyst
