Crude oil Flashcards
what is crude oil?
a mixture of hydrocarbons, compounds of hydrogen and carbon only
what is a fraction of crude oil?
a mixture of similar hydrocarbons with similar boiling points
as the boiling point increases what happens to the fraction?
The fraction gets darker in colour
The fraction gets more viscous (like treacle)
Refinery gases trates
Low B.P.
Low molecular mass
Light colour
Low viscosity
Bitumen trates
High B.P
High molecular mass
Dark colour
High viscosity
Refinery gases uses
Fuel for home cooking
Gasoline uses
Fuel for cars
Kerosene uses
Fuel for aircraft
Diesel uses
Fuel for trains
Fuel oil uses
Fuel for ships
Bitumen uses
Making roads
What happens in fractional distillation?
Each of the fractions are separated from crude oil
How does fractional distillation work?
- Heated crude oil vapours enter the column
- Vapours rise until they reach their boiling point
- Different vapours condense at different heights due to their different boiling points
- Similar vapours condense together as a fraction
