What is Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM)?
A holistic approach to coastal management which uses integrated strategies to manage social, economic and environmental issues sustainably.
Why do councils produce ICZMs?
To reduce conflict between stakeholders and decision-makers.
What are sediment cells?
Stretches of coastline where erosion, deposition and movement of sediment occur in isolation from adjacent cells. They are a basic unit of coastal management.
How many sediment cells are there in England and Wales?

What is hard engineering?
Coastal management strategies that interfere with natural processes using man-made structures in order to protect the coastline.
What is soft engineering?
Coastal management strategies that aim to work with natural process instead of against them. Often cheaper and more sustainable than hard engineering.
What is a honeypot site?
A site which is deliberately developed to attract tourists (with cafés, toilets etc) and draw them away from fragile areas of the ecosystem to reduce environmental impact of tourism.
What is the Butler Model?
A model which shows the six stages that a typical tourist resort will transition through.
What is a conflict matrix?
A grid used to identify conflict between different stakeholders.
What are stakeholders?
People/groups with an interest or concern in something. Eg the coastal management of an area.
What is DEFRA?
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
What is a CBD?
Central Business District. The commercial and business centre of a town or city.
Define sustainability.
Meeting the needs of the current generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs
What does SMP stand for and what is it?
Shoreline Management Plan. It identifies sustainable long-term management policies for the coast.
