Crowd & Collective Behaviors Flashcards
Antisocial Behavior
when people do not act in socially acceptable ways or consider the rights of others
Collective Behavior
the way in which people act when they are part of a group
Social Loafing
putting less effort into doing something when you are with others doing the same thing
Deindividuation
the state of losing our sense of individuality and becoming less aware of our own responsibility for our actions
Culture
The social norms within a culture can affect collective behavior. For example social loafing does not seem to occur in all societies such as China which is a collectivist country. This means that it is difficult to assume that collective behavior will be the same in all cultures
Personality
Some people have internal locus of control while others have an external locus of control. ‘Internals’ are people who believe that they can control the things that happen to them, while ‘externals’ attribute the things that happen to them to factors that are out of their control.
Morality
Whether people behave in pro or antisocial ways in collective situations also depends on an individual’s morality. This is their sense of what is right and what is wrong.
