what is croup
upper resp tract infection causing oedema in larynx
causes of croup
viral
parainfluenza
others; influenza, adenovirus, rsv
presentation of croup
- Increased work of breathing
- ‘Barking’ cough, occurring in clusters of coughing episodes
- Hoarse voice
- Stridor
Low grade fever
investiagtions of crup
usually clinically diagnosed
management of croup
usually self limitting
single dose of corticosteroid- dexamethssone
moderate- severe croup manageemnt
- Oral dexamethasone - if too unwell to receive oral medication can give IM dexamethasone or nebulised budesonide

what is RSV
virus which leads to a resp infection
symptoms of RSV
○ Mild cold-like symptoms (runny nose, cough, sneezing, fever)
○ Wheezing and difficulty breathing in severe cases
Can cause bronchiolitis or pneumonia in infants
when is RSV common
winter and early spring
treatment of RSV
Supportive care (oxygen, fluids, nasal suctioning); severe cases may require hospitalization.
age range between rsv and croup
croup = 6 months -3 years
rsv = infants and young kids
