Parainfluenza virus
Risk factors of croup - 3
young age
males

Presentation of croup - 4
- barking cough
- stridor when agitated
- gets worse at night
- URTI symptoms e.g. fever, coryza
What are the categories of severity of croup - 3
Mild - barking cough but no stridor
Moderate - barking cough with stridor. No agitation
Severe - barking cough, stridor and agitation
Difference between Epiglottitis and Croup.
Seriousness and presentation,
EPIGLOTTITS
- airway threatening
- drooling, sniffing position stridor
CROUP
- common and not usually severe
- barking cough and stridor
Differentials of croup - 3
- bacterial tracheitis
- epiglottitis
- Retropharyngeal/peritonsillar abscess
When should a child be admitted for croup - 3
- RR over 60
- moderate or severe croup
- if they have co-morbidities
Mild case management of croup
Single dose dexamethasone
Hospital management of more severe cases of croup -3
O2
nebulized steroids
Nebulised adrenaline
