Crossmatch & Transfusion Flashcards
Why is it important to give type-specific transfusions in cats? If typing is not possible, why is a crossmatch absolutely necessary?
They have preformed Ab against other type
Prevent severe reaction
Cats with which blood type will likely be killed when given a NON type specific transfusion?
Type B
What sort of testing (e.g. card typing, crossmatching) would be needed to identify a Mik incompatibility?
Cross match
Which cat breeds have high and low blood type B prevalence?
High prevalence: Exotic shorthair, british shorthair, cornish rex, devon rex
Low: siamese, tonkinese, burmese, russian blue, ocicat, oriental shorthair
In dogs, what DEA is considered to be the most clinically significant?
DEA 1
Do clinically significant preformed anti-RBC antibodies exist in cats? Do they exist in dogs?
Yes in cats
No in dogs
What blood type in dogs is considered the ideal universal blood donor? What blood type in dogs can be considered a “universal” donor for practical purposes in emergency situations?
DEA 4; DEA 1 -
What are the components of the major crossmatch and what are the components of the minor crossmatch?
Major: Donor RBC, recipient serum
Minor: Recipient RBC, donor serum
What does a positive crossmatch reaction indicate? What does a negative crossmatch reaction indicate?
Positive = reaction - do not give blood
Negative = no reaction - ok to give blood
How does agglutination in the patient’s autocontrol affect interpretation of the major crossmatch and of the minor crossmatch?
Can’t interpret results
Understand the major principles of blood alloantibodies, both preformed and those made in sensitized individuals. Be able to apply these concepts to critical thinking case
based scenarios.
.
Be able to interpret a feline or canine blood typing test
