why?
- population was growing too large too quickly, ensured they could cope with their population
how?
- policy is supervised by workplaces, women must seek permission in order to get pregnant and are put on a waiting list
- extra benefits if you comply, e.g. free child healthcare
effect on the balance between working and non working parts of the population
- fewer babies would reduce the dependency ratio
- more adults to support dependent children
nazi germany (1939)
why?
- to create a pure race of perfect humans, ‘master race’
how?
- eliminating all of europes jews/the holocaust
women’s role?
- sought to keep women out of the workforce and confine them to children, kitchen and church
- so they could perform their biological role
examples
- nazis restricted abortion and contraception to promote growth of the master race
- sterilised 375,000 disabled people
- promoted the expressive role of women in a patriarchal society
