Cross-Country Flight Planning Flashcards
Name the special use airspace and explain each
M.C.P.R.A.W.N
-Military operating areas (MOA): Air combat and aerobatics can be occurring
- Controlled Firing Area: activities that may be hazardous to non hazardous aircrafts
- Prohibited area: Can not fly in it. Used for security purposes
- Restricted area: Can fly through if you contact the controlling agency of that area and request it
- Alert area: High volume of pilot training or unusual type of aerial activity
- National Security: Can fly through them but they do not want you to
What are the oxygen requirements?
- Above 12,500 to 14,000 ft MSL: the required minimum flight crew must be provided with and must use supplemental oxygen for periods of flight over 30 minutes
- Above 14,000 ft MSL: the required minimum flight crew must be provided with and must use supplemental oxygen at all times
- Above 15,000 ft MSL: each occupant must be provided with supplemental oxygen
What are some ways to file an IFR plan?
When should you file it?
- FSs by phone, over the radio, or in person
- Online
- ForeFlight
- ATC
- Should be filed 30 minutes prior to departure
How do you cancel an IFR flight plan?
How do you cancel on an uncontrolled airport?
Can you cancel it during flight? if so what is required?
- IFR flight plans are automatically cancelled by ATC upon landing
- For non towered airports you must contact ATC or FSS to cancel
- You can also cancel it anytime in the air if you are out of IMC and out of class A airspace
What are the minimum fuel requirements for an IFR flight plan?
- Complete the flight to the first airport of intended landing
- Fly to the alternate airport
- 45 minutes at normal cruise speed
When do you need an alternate airport?
You always need an alternate airport unless the airport you are going to has an instrument approach and the weather is above the 1-1-2-3 rule
What is the 1-1-2-3 rule?
- 1 hour before to 1 hour after ETA
- 2,000 ft ceiling above the airport elevation
- 3 SM visibility
Non precision approach visibility requirements
- 800 ft ceiling
- 2 SM visibility
Precision approach visibility requirements
- 600 ft ceiling
- 2 SM visibility
How did you make sure that you were fit to fly today?
I.M.S.A.F.E
-Illness
- Medication: must be approved by FAA
- Stress: Acute (short term) and Chronic (long term)
- Alcohol: Can not fly if within the past 8 hours you were drinking before the flight, have 0.04% of alcohol in blood or if you feel any symptoms of it
- Fatigue: Acute and chronic
- Emotion
How did you establish your personal minimums and how did you make sure that everything was ready and legal for the flight?
P.A.V.E
-Pilot
- Aircraft
- enVironment
- External pressures
What are the IFR minimum altitudes?
- If over a mountainous area then it is 2,000 ft above the highest obstacle within a horizontal area of 4 NM
- If over a mountainous area the in is 1,000 ft above the highest obstacle within a horizontal distance of 4 NM
What are the IFR cruising altitudes?
-When operating below 18,000 ft MSL and on a magnetic course of 0-179 then it is any odd thousand number and if on a magnetic course of 180-359 then any even thousand number
