Relative poverty criticisms
It is downplayed as a legitimate way to measure poverty.
3 main disadvantages:
1. It confuses poverty with income inequality.
2. Misleading in a situation where living standards and welfare rates. They all rise in real terms.
3. Not suited to comparing countries at different stages of development.
Consistent poverty criticisms
Not changed since 1987.
Recent survey stated that a loss of creditability present with this measure.
Led to ‘reconfigured’ deprivation measures.
Measurement inadequate - not getting enough support
