Criticisms Flashcards
Hume’s Epicurean Hypothesis
Hume suggests that given infinite time, a chaotic universe could eventually organize itself into an orderly one by chance. However, the finite age of the universe challenges this idea.
Multiverse Theory vs. Design Argument
The multiverse theory posits infinite universes with all possible physical laws. This could explain the fine-tuning of our universe without needing a designer. However, Swinburne argues there’s little evidence for this theory.
Hume’s ‘Unique Case’ Argument
Hume argues we cannot infer a designer for the universe from a single, unique case without experience of other universes being designed. The universe’s origin exceeds human reason and enquiry.
Design Arguments as Abductive
Swinburne presents design arguments as inferences to the best explanation for natural laws and complexity. This approach seeks personal explanation (God) when scientific explanation falls short.
