You should also keep a safe distance around your vehicle, and this will give a time to do what
To react if another driver makes a mistake and give yourself enough space on all sides of the vehicle
Scan the road of the vehicle so you can see hazards early and avoid last-minute moves. The time around
10-15 seconds
Do not constantly look at the vehicle in front of you. This is known as
A fixed stare can be dangerous
As you scan ahead,
Be alert for vehicles and hazards around you, and this prepares you to react quickly to changes in the road ahead
On the freeway,
Be ready for rapid changes in road conditions and traffic flow and watch for signals from other drivers and expect merging vehicles at on-ramps and interchanges
Tailgating makes it harder for you to see the road ahead because
The vehicle in front of you blocks the view and will not also have enough time to react if the driver in front of you brakes suddenly
If a vehicle merges in front of you too closely
Take your foot off the gas pedal/accelerator, and this creates space between you and the vehicle ahead without needing to slam on your brakes or swerve into another lane
Use the “3 seconds rule”
To avoid tailgating
A tailgater is behind you and allows extra space ahead do not brake suddenly by
Slow down gradually or merge into another lane to prevent collision with the tailgater
The driver behind you wants to pass by
Allow enough distance in front of the vehicle, so the driver will have space to merge in front of you
Towing a trailer or carrying a heavy load, the extra weight makes it
Harder to stop
Following large vehicles that block your view ahead
Extra space allows you to see around the vehicle
You see a bus, school bus, or a vehicle with a placard at railroad crossings, and these vehicles must
Stop at the railroad crossing and merge onto a freeway
Do not stay in another driver’s blind spot because
The other drivers may not see the vehicle
Avoid driving directly alongside other vehicles on multilane streets
Other drivers might enter your lane or change lanes without looking that causing a crash into you
If possible and safe
Make space for vehicles entering freeways even though you have the right of way, and this can help collision
At freeway exits,
Do not drive alongside other vehicles and may decide to exit suddenly or swerve back to the freeway
Keep space between your vehicle and parked vehicles. Someone may
Step out from between them and open the vehicle’s door or pull out suddenly
Be careful when driving near motorcyclists or bicyclists
Always leave plenty of space
At intersections:
1) Look both ways even if other traffic has a red light or a stop sign
2) Look to the left first, and vehicles they might come from the left and are closer to you than the right side
3) Look to the right
4) Take one more look to left
Do not rely on traffic lights
Some drivers do not obey them
Before you enter an intersection
Look left, right, and ahead for approaching traffic
To check your blind spot
Look over your right and left shoulder out of your side windows, and do not turn your whole body or the steering wheel
Check your blind spots before you:
1) Change lanes
2) Turn at an intersection
3) Merge with traffic
4) Back up
5) Leaving Parking Space
6) Parallel Park
7) Pull out from the curb
8) Open your car door
Knowing what is behind can help avoid
Rear-end collisions
Check behind the vehicle before you:
1) Change lanes and the blind spot
2) Reduce your speed
3) Turn into a side road or driveway
4) Stop to pull into a parking space
5) Drive down a long or steep hill
6) Back up
Backing up is always dangerous because
It is hard to see behind your vehicle
Back up slowly to avoid collision
Do not depend only on your mirror or only looking out a side window
Before you back up or back out of a parking space
1) Check in front and behind the vehicle before you get in
2) Make sure the kid are away from your vehicle if you have children in full view before moving your vehicle
3) Check your blind spot, and as a safety, measure look over your right and left shoulder again while backing up
