Neuromuscular blockade
A
Total chemical paralysis.
No sedative or analgesic properties. WE WANT TO GIVE SEDATION.
Facilitate ET intubation and mechanical ventilation.

Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale
A
Measures level of sedation on a 10 point scale:
4 - combative
0 - calm/alert
-5 - unarousable
Monitoring sedation status over consecutive days.

A
- Midazolam (versed)
- Propofol (conscious sedation, status epilepticus)
- Ativan
- Valium

Medications used for analgesia
A
- Fentanyl (opioid, used in pts that are hemodynamically unstable. Helps control pain and agitation without lowering BP)
- Hydromorphone (Dilaudid)
- Morphine
- Acetaminophen

ICU psychosis
A
Pts who do not get enough sleep may start not processing things correctly

Pain assessment / scale in ICU
A
BP elevated, HR elevated, facial grimacing
FLACC scale
- face
- legs
- arms
- cry
- consolability

Prevention on VAP
A
- HOB > 30
- suction before putting HOB down
- brush teeth
- Peridex (oral care)
