CRISPR Flashcards
What is CRISPR?
It allows researchers to easily alter DNA sequences and modify gene function. Its many potential applications include correcting genetic defects, treating and preventing the spread of diseases and improving crops
What can CRISPR do?
Enhance fruits and vegetables, Cure devastating diseases, Diagnose COVID-19 quickly and cheaply, Engineer someone’s physical characteristics, Eliminate disabilities (and therefore people with disabilities)
what was the first food modified in a lab?
It was the flavr savr tomato, given a longer shelf life and a gene to suppress the rotting enzyme
What was done to treat maternal infertility?
the babies were made carrying the genetic material of three people, or parents rather that two
How does CRISPR work?
It is like a GPS of the old genetic manipulation system, just give a copy of the DNA you want to modify and put the system into a living cell.
What type of cells does CRISPR work for?
All cells
What happened in 2015 using CRISPR?
Scientists used CRISPR to eliminate HIV infected cells from living patients
How does cancer occur?
When cells refuse to die and keep multiplying while concealing themselves from the immune system
How many genetic diseases are caused from a single letter DNA?
Over 3000, and we are working on a version of CAS9 capable of fixing the one letter now
How do modified human effect everyone else?
This because they could alter the genome of our entire species from their engineered traits passing down to their children
How common is the termination of down syndrome babies before they are born?
In europe 92% are terminated
