Events of Manchurian Crisis
The Japanese army claimed that Chinese saboteurs had damaged the South Manchurian Railway which the Japanese controlled
The Japanese army invaded and conquered Manchuria
The Japanese set up a puppet government and called the area Manchukuo
The Chinese appealed to the League for help
The League sent the Lytton Commission to review what was happening in the area, it took the Lytton Commission almost a year to produce a report that just stated that Japan should leave the area
Instead Japan left the League and invaded the Chinese province of Jehol
Causes of Manchurian Crisis
The Japanese armed forces wanted an empire
Japan was short of living space for its population
Manchuria was rich in natural resources
The Wall St Crash had had a devastating effect on the Japanese economy as the USA and Japan were major trading partners
