What is the 1st phase of crisis?
Self-esteem threatened, and anxiety increases
What is the 2nd phase of crisis?
Anxiety rises, defense mechanisms fail, Problem solving fails
What is the 3rd phase of crisis?
Anxiety at severe or near panic levels, automatic behaviors: withdrawal/avoidance (flight, fight or freeze)
What is the 4th phase of crisis?
Anxiety overwhelms and personality disorganizes: Psychosis, violence to self and others.
Define Crisis.
A struggle for balance when the problem seems unsolvable.
What is a crisis?
Sudden event that disturbs psychological homeostasis and results in disequilibrium.
What does a crisis overwhelm for an individual?
It overwhelms the usual coping mechanisms and skills/mechanisms the client uses to resolve the problems.
What are symptoms of a crisis?
Extreme distress, anxiety and the ability to function is impaired.
Before a crisis is an individual considered to be mentally healthy or unhealthy?
Healthy
What are the 5 elements of a crisis?
- Acute
- Time-limited occurrence (lasts 4,6,8 weeks and resolves or lessens)
- Experienced as overwhelming emotional reaction to event
- Crises are universal across cultures
- Culture plays a strong role in how event is perceived and interperted
What is the goal of crisis intervention?
Reduce anxiety so person can feel safe and think and be able to return to previous level of functioning before crisis occurred.
The resolution of the crisis depends on what?
Action of client and helpful intervention of others.
What is the time frame for crisis intervention therapy
It is short 1 to 6 to 8 weeks
What is the focus of crisis intervention therapy?
On the resolution of immediate or present problem
What is the nurses role in crisis intervention therapy?
Active and direct in the helping process (eliciting feelings and meaning in the person)
What does early crisis intervention do for prognosis?
increases the possibility of a good prognosis
The client undergoing Crisis intervention therapy is encouraged to work with the nurse to do what?
Set realistic goals and plan interventions or ways to deal with the crisis.
What are the three types of Crises?
Maturational, Situational, Adventitious
Define Maturational/Developmental Crisis?
Normal events that everyone goes through. It’s a response to situations that trigger emotions related to unresolved conflicts in ones life.
Give example of Maturational/developmental crises.
Leaving home as a young adult, birth of a child, marriage
Define a situational crisis
Uncommon or extraordinary external and often unanticipated life-cycle transitions over which the person may feel a lock of control.
Give examples of situational crises.
Severe physical or mental illness, divorce or death of significant person, extreme change in financial status
Define an adventitous crisis.
precipitated by natural disasters, natural disasters, or crimes of violence. The person has little or no control over the situation and is emotionally overwhelmed and deleted.
Give examples of adventitous crises.
Natural disasters in nature such as forest fires, wars, riots, terrorism, tornados, earthquakes, and floods. Crimes or violence such as workplace violence, assault, spouse or child abuse, or murder.
