Social definition of criminal behaviour:
if society claims an act is a crime then it becomes a crime

people different views on what is and isn’t considered a crime
Law-making
actions wanted to be illegal only made against the law by having the power to influence law-maker, some laws can be changed by public opinion

what if crime is done for self defense
thought more carefully if they are a crime or not and seen as reasonable for the situation
Formal sanctions against criminals:
Non-court sanctions
Court sanctions:
Non-court sanctions:
Cautions: by police for minor offences e.g graffiti (must admit you are guilty)
Conditional cautions: by police, must agree to rules e.g receive treatment from drug abuse
Penalty notices: 18/over e.g possess cannabis, shoplift, being drunk, disorderly in public
Court sanctions:
Custodial sentences: immediately sent to prison - mandatory and discretionary life sentences
Community sentences: includes unpaid work , probations, curfew, regulations e.g drug tests
Fines: financial penalties, amount can be determined by how serious the offence is
Discharge: can be conditional when the offender repeats the offence so the court can give an alternative sentence or have no penalty despite defendant being kind of guilty
