Criminal Behaviour (Evaluation) Flashcards

1
Q

Role Of Amygdala + Inherited Criminality (Biological Explanations)

A

Research Support:
Raine Asymmetry + Osbourne and West (13% / 40%)
-Counter = Research doesn’t consider env factors
*Evaluate individual research e.g. Raine = Validity

Biologically Reductionist
-Counter with good for research as focus one area

Only explain violent crime
-CDH13 + Low MAOA (Inherited Crim) = Only linked to violence
-Amygdala dysfunction + IED only linked with violence
-What about white collar crime?

Deterministic
-Bad for judicial system if blame on genes not individual choices

Q

Eysenck + Cognitive Factors (Individual Differences)

A

Eysenck Deterministic
-Problems for judicial system if little blame
-Takes blame off for crimes

EPQ Self Report:
-Social desirability bias
Counter = Included lie scale so could remove Ps results if lying

Cognitive Bias Kohlberg False Scenarios:
-False scenarios, real representation of how commit crime?

Q

Gender Socialisation + Differential Association

A

Both Good Social Implications:
-Socialise boys to be less aggressive + don’t encourage hyper masculinity
-Don’t allow children to mix with those with pro criminal attitudes = reduce crime
-Benefits wider society as less crime

Research Against Them:
-Gender Socialisation not wholly explain, higher testosterone may explain why boys more aggressive, less credibility for G Socialisation
-Osbourne + West research can support differential association as sons associate with fathers, but correlational + ignore env

Gender Socialisation Out Of Date (Ideas from 50s):
-Idea of trad family not relevant today
-Women nearly just as likely to rise to corporate positions as men, can’t explain white collar crime
