Tolpuddle Martyrs

A

1834
A peaceful group of Dorset Farm workers from the village of Tolpuddle tried to start a Trade union. Local rich farmers and government feared losing control. A law from 1797 that existed to stop swearing of secret oaths in the army was used against them since they’d sworn not to tell anyone about their meetings. They were sentenced to be transported for 7 years.
