felony
some of the most egregious/aggressive crimes
ex: manslaughter, murder, assault
involves potential prison time and capital punishment
principal
the person who perpetrates the crime
misdemeanor
smaller scale crime
ex: trespassing
max prison time is under a year
accomplice
person who aids and supports the principal
accessory after the fact
fully aware that the principal has committed a crime and helps them to avoid the law
potentially charged with aiding the principal
crime of omission
you have a legal responsibility to act in a certain legal situation, but you fail to act
ex: a hit and run, lying about salary while filing taxes
accessory before the fact
a person who orders a crime or assists a principal, but is not present during the actual crime
attempt
the government must prove you had intent, there was a “substantial step” taken (such as purchasing a gun and asking where the person lives)
