Established the Canadian Club whiskey distilling company in the late 1800s.

Founded and expanded the town of Walkerville by building homes and businesses for his employees. Became the first whiskey distiller in Canada to trademark his whiskey and put a logo on his barrels.

The Purple Gang

  • The Purple Gang was the first gang to take advantage of Prohibition by acquiring and selling illegal alcohol. Jewish Americans who started as simple thieves but evolved into bootleggers that had ties with Al Capone in Chicago. Anyone who was not a part of the Purple Gang and who dared to smuggle whiskey across the Detroit River would be in danger of being robbed and killed for their whiskey.

The Detroit River

A
  • 75 percent of all whiskey that was smuggled into the United States during Prohibition was smuggled across the Detroit River. It was by far the busiest area for smuggling during Prohibition, and the majority of the whiskey being smuggled in the United States was Canadian Club whiskey.

Al Capone

A

-Al Capone, also known as Scarface, was the most notorious bootlegger ever. Capone eventually gained control of the entire city by having his rivals and enemies killed, such as Dean O’Bannion and Bugs Moran. Al Capone was imprisoned in 1932 for tax evasion where he was treated for syphilis, gonorrhea and cocaine withdrawals which took a serious toll on his health.

  • Charles Luciano is credited for founding the ‘Commission’, a union of Mafia members in New York, Boston, Detroit, New Jersey, Chicago, Buffalo and Philadelphia. Lucky Luciano became the boss of one of New York’s ‘Five Families’ after his hit on Joe ‘The Boss’ Masseria. He then became the most powerful boss in all of New York, and perhaps all of the country, after his hit on the ‘Boss of Bosses’ Salvatore Maranzano.

Enoch Johnson

A

Enoch Johnson was the boss of Atlantic City, New Jersey. He had strong ties both politically and criminally, which made Atlantic City a safe haven for gangsters. Enoch Johnson was a businessman and a politician as well as a bootlegger, meaning he had multiple incomes from a variety of sources around the country.
