what are methods used by the police to tackle crime?

STOP AND SEARCH
A
- this can prove or disprove officers suspicions about a suspects involmement in a crime or possessions of weapons and drugs
- s and s can be carried out at any time or place by officers however they must have reasonable grounds to suspect a person.
FOR EXAMPLE: if stop and search is carried our the person will rcieve a receipt and no criminal record will be given if nothing is found

- can be effective in catching people carring weapons or drugs therefore preventing future crimes and protecting people from crimes
- some argue this menthod targets people who are from minority backgrounds or poverty

COMMUNITY POLICING
why is it successful?
A
- this is where the police develop links with communities they serve
- it builds in the community and in relationships between public and police, commnity policing can increase feelings of safety due to police being present. allows poice to develop knowledge of of local known criminals and troublesome youths. schools in communities will also have a local police officer
for example: the police can come inti schools and give presentations on how to prevent/avoid crime and stay safe

why isnt community policing successful?

- failures include a reluctance of communities to engage with and talk to police, police can be seen as the enemy. for example: police officers may be harrassed by members of a community for trying to engage, demotivation oficers from helping

- a kinfe or gun amnesty is where the police will allow teh public to hand them a knife or gun without fear of prosecution at any local police station.
- amnesties can be succeffful in getting thpusands of dangerous weapons off of the street, therefor preventing future crimes
- amnesties rely on the god will of people to hand in weapons off of their own accord - many will also be scared that the polive will arrest them.

- by incarcerating criminals, public saftey is increased as it removes criminals from society
- depending on the severity of a crime, a criminal will be sentenced appropriately. those guilty of the most serious crimes like mudrer, rape will be improsoned for years/decades
- FOR EXAMPLE child cerial killer lucy letby was jailed for a whole life order

- even those receiving lengthy sentences such as 20 years will still be out at some point if they were incarcerated young
- within prison it may be possible that a person can still conduct crime through instructing other people - gangland
FOR EXAMPLE 16 year old aaron campbell was sentenced to 24 years for raping and killing a 6 year old, there is a possibility that in his lifetime he will be released back into society

- the media are quick to stereotype prison life as ‘too cosy’ and ‘luxurious’ as they get 3 meals a day, beds, showers, a gym and sparse television time
- prisoners are cared and catered for. FOR EXAMPLE the annual cost of imprisoning a criminal is £ 37,000 , in HMP barlinnie, each prisoner has a television set

- prison punishes offenders by removing their liberty. this includes removal from society, family, friends and lifestyle.
- prisoners follow a strict daily routine including a uniform and may also work whilst behind bars and are allowed few luxuries
- punishment of criminals satisfies the victim - this is called retribution. many victims will want a prison sentence for criminals as recompense
