Religious offence
Any act that breaks a religious law or teaching. These are seen as sins but are not always illegal

Disputes between private individuals or groups

Serious offences that often result in prison sentences

An act that forcefully deprives someone of their property

Deterrence
Convinced people not to commit crimes by using other people as examples and harsh punishments
Punishment as Protection
If the criminal is locked away they are unable to commit crimes so society is safe
Retribution
The crime is equal to the punishment so the victim is able to get revenge for the crimes committed against them
Reparation
When the offender has to do something to make up for their crime
Vindication
Teaches people to respect the law so they are unwilling to break it
Reform
Changes the minds of criminal so they see their actions were wrong and change their ways
Prison reform
Trying to make prisons better for inmates
