what is hue and cry?
a victim/witness of a crime raises a hue and cry (shouting)
those who hear it are expected to catch the criminal
what were tithings?
shires split into hundreds, and then split into 10 tithings, all people in a tithing are responsible for each other
what is an oath?
swear an oath before god, the accused could swear innocence under oath
what is a shire reeve?
a sheriff appointed by community took criminals to court and made sure punishments were carried out
what is a trial by combat?
2 people fighting to the death or until one surrenders to settle disputes
what is capital punishment?
the death penalty
what is corporal punishment?
physical punishment eg. whipping
what is an outlaw?
men aged 14 or over who tried to avoid trial and punishment by running away to forests or the next village.
what is a waived women?
same as outlaws but women, lost their protection of the law which means if someone found and killed them they would get a reward not a punishment
what is the feudal system?
social rankings eg. king on top, peasants on bottom
what is trial by ordeal?
to fight someone or a physical test to allow god to judge your guilt
what is the sanctuary knocker?
knock on the church for 40 days of sanctuary
what is benefit of clergy?
neck verse/psalm 51 tried and read in church court wont get the death penalty
what were church courts?
courts that were dealing with moral crimes
did not commit the death penalty unless you were a witch
went against the kings court and strained its aunthority
what were forest laws?
forests were owned by royals made poaching illegal
