What is deterrence?
To deter or discourage someone from doing something that is against the law
What is reform?
Help offenders see what they have done wrong and ensure they will not do it again
Why do Christians think reform is important?
Allows offenders to repent and be forgiven (to get treatment if ill)
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good”
They want to show compassion
Why do Muslims believe there is suffering?
Allah is aware of suffering and allows it to happen, for a reason not apparent to humans
To see how faithful a person can be
Allah doesn’t allow suffering greater than a person can endure
