A

Cow-towns like Abilene often had cowboys who had been on the long drive for months and got paid once they reached the towns

They would spend their money on alcohol, gambling and prostitutes, which led to violence

A

From 1862 onwards more families moved to the West by buying 160 acres from the Homestead Act

This reduced violence in the west as the families were more stable and less violent than the early frontiersman and gold miners who were often outlaws, loners or violent men

There was a conflict between a cattle baron called John Chisum and smaller ranchers

Billy the Kid’s friend Murphy was killed and Billy swore to get revenge

A

In 1886-1887 many ranchers used barbed wire to fence off the land

This created more tension with the Homesteaders as it prevented them getting access to water

A

In Wyoming cattle barons tried to intimidate smaller ranches and Homesteaders in Johnson county

No justice was given against the cattle barons after this event, showing law and order is still not in place properly

Rich cattle barons used their influence to buy the best lawyers and string out the trail until the country ran out of money and they were acquitted
