Describe, in detail, two ways that highlight that crime in Scotland and/or the UK is a problem (6)
One thing that highlights that crime in Scotland is a problem is the rising levels of cybercrime and fraud. With more and more people relaying on the internet for shopping and pretty much anything chances of getting caught in fraud or cybercrime is high. For example, the Scottish Crime and Justice Survey has shown that while traditional crimes have decreased, fraud and computer misuse crimes have increased.
Another thing that highlights that crime is Scotland is a problem is the persistent violent crime rates. This includes assaults and knife crime and alcohol and drug violence. For example, Scottish Governments Crime and Justice statistics have shown serious assaults and attempted murders have shown fluctuations rather then consistent decline.

Explain, in detail, two reasons why some people commit crime as a result of social causes (6)
One reason why some people commit crime as a result of social causes is peer pressure. This is when you are pressured into doing something you wouldnt normally do unless you were pressured into it. For example, 32.9% of young people in Scotland felt pressured to act tough or hard.
Another reason why some people commit crime as a result of social causes is alcohol.
When people are drunk they are less able to think about the consequences of their actions and are less able to control their emotions which makes violent and aggressive behaviour more likely to occur. 40% of prisoners were drunk at the time of their arrest in Scotland.

One biological factor that can cause crime is age. This is because your decision making part of your brain the prefrontal cortex doesn’t fully develop until you are 26 making you more likely to make irrational and impulsive decisions . For example the peak age for offending is 23.
Another biological factor that can cause crime is gender. This is because males produce higher levels of testosterone making them more likely to partake in aggressive and violent behaviour. 80% of crime is committed by males.
