Crime and Deviance: Functionalism: Cohen Flashcards
What does Cohen argue?
Cohen argues that deviant subcultures emerge because of status frustration.
What is status frustration?
A sense of personal failure and inadequacy.
What does Cohen say causes status frustration?
The working class are denied status in society as they are trying to emulate the values and aspirations of the middle-class but do not have the means to achieve this.
How are delinquent subcultures formed?
As these working class people are all going through the same thing, they join together and create their own delinquent subculture.
What are the values of these delinquent subcultures?
The values are the reverse of the mainstream norms and values; those who are most deviant get rewarded.
