What is the social definition of crime?
A behaviour or action that offends the social code of a particular community
What is the legal definition for crime?
An act that breaks the law
What is the definition for deviance?
Differing from what society views as normal behaviour
What is a norm?
What is the socially acceptable behaviour in a particular situation e.g queuing up
What is a value?
Ideas or beliefs people have about general principles of what is right or wrong e.g respecting the elderly
What is a moral code?
A system of ethical principles or guidelines of what is right or wrong e.g teacher standards
What is a mores?
Extreme norms which focus on morally correct and ethical behaviours e.g don’t commit canabalism
What are the types of criminal offence?
• summary- the lowest level crime, tried in magistrates court e.g shoplifting
•triable-either-way- can be a high or low level crime depending on the circumstances, can be tried in either court e.g drug offences
•indictable-the highest level offences, tried in crown court e.g murder
What is a formal sanction?
Punishments imposed by official bodies such as the police, courts, schools and other institutions e.g a fine
What is an informal sanction?
Punishments given by society as a way of showing their disapproval for the behaviour e.g
Ostracising

What is a caution?
A warning given for the police or CPS for minor crimes such as graffiti
What is a conditional caution?
The offender must stick to certain restrictions and if they do not they can be charged with a crime e.g attending a drug rehabilitation programme
What is a penalty notice?
Penalties the offender must pay in order to not get convicted for the crime usually used for minor crimes such as shoplifting
What is a custodial sentence?
Imprisonment or detention in a young offenders institution for the most serious crimes such as GBH
What is a community sentence?
Punishments served in the community rather than in custody such as unpaid work these will be given to the offender for a set period of time and then their behaviour will be reviewed
What is a fine?
Financial penalties that depend on the seriousness of the crime
What is discharge?
A conditional discharge is when the offender can be given a harsher punishment if they commit another crime in a given period of time. Absolute discharge is when the offender is given no criminal convictions
What are the types of deviance?
Deviant and good e.g zero waste lifestyle
Deviant and eccentric e.g having lots of cats
Deviant and bad e.g theft
