Crime vs. deviance
- not all crimes are deviant, and not all deviant acts are illegal.
- crime departs from social norms and against the law, deviance is not necessarily illegal.
What is a consensus crime?
Universally condemnation, meaning everyone agrees, Ex, rapre murder
What is conflict crime?
a crime that has a general disagreement, such as smoking or gambling.

what is the concept of crime
socially constructed concept that requires formal control and social intervention
what is an indictable offence?
serious offence such as assault, theft over $5000 or murder
what is a summary offence?
less serious offence such as theft under 5000, or impersonating police officer
what is conventional crime?
crime committed by individuals/small groups with some degree of direct/indirect contact
what is a non-conventional crime?
crime which is illegal but not usually pursued by the criminal justice system due to unconventionality
what is deviance
behaviour violating social norms but is not illegal
what is relative in terms of crime
idea that what is defined as crime can vary with time and location
what is evolutive?
idea that what comprises crime can change, taking different forms and meaning over time
What is violent crime?
general category including homicide, attempted murder, and assault. Mostly indictable offences involving physical violation.
What is homicide
act of causing death to another person, whether directly or indirectly by negligence or unlawful act
What is culpable homicide
criminal offence ie. murder
what is non-culpable homicide
legally justified
What are the four different types of murder and define each
first-degree, second-degree, homicide, and infanticide.
first degree: planned and deliberate
second degree: unplanned but deliberate/ falls outside the category of first-degree
manslaughter: unintentional killing of a person, even if results from the intention to cause harm
infanticide: intentional/unintentional killing of newborn through acts of omission
what is hate crime?
crime where the perpetrator’s conduct is motivated by bias, hatred, or prejudice regarding race, colour, religion, more
describe the levels of assault.
1) Level 1- no serious bodily hard/physical injury
2) level 2- forced or threatened force, degree of body harm ex. bruises, broken bones
3) Level 3 - victim is disfigured, wounded, has life endangered
What are the three levels of sexual assault?
level 1 (common assault, level 2 assault, level 3 (aggravated) assault
what is elder abuse
harm done towards adults aged 65 or older, most commonly done through financial or emotional abuse
what is robbery
anyone stealing through violence or threats, assaulting with the intention of stealing, using weapon
