Base
Base: Also referred to as a domicile. A Southwest city where Flight Attendants begin and end
their scheduled work assignments. (11 TOTAL) All trips must begin and end in a base.
ATL, BWI, DAL, DEN, HOU, LAS, LAX, MDW, MCO, OAK, PHX
Block
Time from brake release to brake set with the intent to fly
Block-in
Time that the brakes are locked and the airplane is parked at the completion of a flight.
Board
Refers to a Flight Attendant’s schedule or line of flying
Crew Scheduling
Department at SWA responsible for ensuring all Southwest flights are
properly staffed with legal Pilots and Flight Attendants. This also includes the Crew Hotels and Transportation Team
Commuter
Flight Attendant who informs company that he/she does not live in his/her Base and designates a city as a point of commuter origination.
CSS
Crew Scheduling System. The primary program used to manage all Pilot & Flight Attendant Scheduling needs.
Deadhead
When a Flight Attendant flies as a passenger in the cabin of the plane. We may deadhead a Flight Attendant to another airport so they can operate a flight out of that airport, or a Flight Attendant may deadhead to or from their base to begin or end their trip. Deadheading Flight Attendants are considered ‘on duty.
Duty
The time a Flight Attendant is at work
ETOPS
Extended Operations, generally referring to our flights between the Continental U.S. and Hawaii
Fatigue
Physiological state in which the Flight Attendant should no longer fly due to a decreased capacity in performance.
FAR
Federal Aviation Regulation. These flight, duty, & rest regulations govern SWA operations.
Herb Time
Central time, named in honor of company founder Herb Kelleher. All information communicated to our Flight Attendants is done so in Central Time.
IROPS
Irregular Operations. Any flight that operates in a manner that may negatively impact our Customers. Irregular Ops include delays, cancellations, emergencies, security threats,
diversions, etc.
JA
Junior Available occurs when a Flight Attendant is assigned or re-assigned by the company into a duty period on a scheduled day off.
Legality
Term used by department to discuss Federal Regulations (FARs) and/or Contractual rules as they pertain to a Flight Attendant’s schedule.
Misconnect
When a Flight Attendant is landing in a station later than scheduled due to irregular operations & will not be on the ground in time for their next scheduled flight on
another aircraft.
NOC
Network Operations Control, current home of all operational divisions of SWA.
Notify
The Crew Scheduling desk is responsible for calling Flight Attendants to acknowledge them of any changes to their trip/pairing.
Open Time
System used to award uncovered trips to Flight Attendants.
Station
An airport/city served by Southwest.
Pairing
(Also referred to as a Trip.) A schedule of flights assigned to a Flight Attendant to work.
Push
When a plane first departs from the gate for the purpose of flight.
Report
Time at which a Flight Attendant’s workday begins and they are expected to be on airport property.
Release
Time at which a Flight Attendant’s work day ends.
Reserve
Flight Attendants on -call to fly trips as needed.
Taxi Out
Time from when the flight leaves the gate to the time it gets wheels up/airborne.
Taxi in
Time from when the plane touches the ground to the time it gets to the gate.
TFP
Trips For Pay. Monetary unit by which Flight Attendants are compensated, converts to dollar amounts. Flight Attendants are paid different amounts per TFP, depending on tenure.
TTGA
Trip Trade Giveaway. System used by Flight Attendants to trade Trips or Flights with each other.
Turn
A one day trip (no overnight)
