Was Zeus’s son and messenger of the gods. Things were always going on in the mythical world. The job of messenger to the gods allowed Hermes to have the inside scoop about everything. There was a warmth about Hermes, the other gods trusted him. It is no wonder most myths include Hermes.

How did geography of Greece affect the way early people lived?
The mountains made travel and trade hard, leading communities to form their own governments and become independent. On the coast the sea connected the Greeks to outsiders. Greeks living near the sea became fishers and traders

Explain how the Minoans led Mycenaeans and later to the city states we are most familiar with.
Minoans traded with the Mycenaeans. Minoans died out, but through trade, Mycenaeans borrowed some of their culture, art styles, pottery designs, religious beliefs, and writing. As the population grew, villages turned to towns. Towns turned to polis, or city-states.

What are the most common myth elements?
A myth is a story passed down about an ancient god or hero. The 5 elements are: supernatural powers, human flaws in the gods, an explanation for earthly occurrences, duals between good and evil, and Greek cultural values.

Explain what democracy looked like in Ancient Greece. Compare that to today.
By the year 500 B.C.E, every free adult make over age 20 was considered a citizen in Athens. These citizens were allowed to vote and then majority ruled. Today, anyone can work to be a citizen. If you are born here then you are considered a citizen. All citizens over the age of 18 can vote.

City states had an agora in the center of the city, were surrounded by a acropolis, shared myths and a common language, established colonies to deal with crowded conditions, took part in the Olympic Games, and had the same religious beliefs

What were the accomplishments of Alexander the Great?
Alexander wanted to rule not only Greece but all the known world. He created the largest empire known up to that time, an empire that was multicultural. Alexander spread Greek culture to Egypt, other parts of North Africa, southwest Asia, and India. He also built many cities that became centers of learning.
