- full details of account holder

- account history
- serial number of any missing cheques
- details of any dishonoured and returned cheques
WHEN INVESTIGATING CHEQUE FRAUD USING FICTITIOUS DETAILS, WHAT 4 ENQUIRIES SHOULD BE MADE WITH THE BANK?
- account number and date opened
- details used when account opened
- nature and amount of first deposit
- details of other deposits
What to obtain from the suspect when interviewing?
A sample of the suspect’s handwriting from bank documents.
What to find out when interviewing regarding possible area canvass
Find out whether the offender was photographed or their image captured on CCTV at the bank or retail outlet and obtain the images.
When must the Serious Fraud Office be notified of an investigation?
All fraud complaints:
- with an actual or potential loss in excess of $2,000,000
- where the facts, law or evidence is of great complexity
- of great interest or concern
The office will determine whether the complaint involves serious or complex fraud
SFO notification procedure
Notifications must be made by Police employees who have been authorised to notify the SFO by the District Commander.
ARRESTS ON BEHALF OF SFO
Serious Fraud Office investigators do not have the power of arrest. Consequently, there are occasions when Police will be asked to arrest a suspect.
