Creative introduction

A

My imaginative peices aimed to illustrate the power of music and nature in people’s lives. Heavily inspired by Ray Bradbury’s portrayal of a speculative dystopian society in 2053 in his short story “The Pedestrian”. In offering an evocative depiction of the effects of isolation and society conformity on an individual refusing to comply, I was inspired to compose my own narrative about an individual seeking reconciliation from the loss of her old identity, drawing largely upon his use of visual and auditory imagery, and the reflective tone. Talk about stimulus

Bradbury made heavy use of natural imagery to depict the spiritual decay of society in “long moonlit avenues” which were “vanishing under flowers and grass”, symbolising a widespread dimming of man’s control through nature obscuring and overtaking man-made constructs as they become redundant. Parallel to this, my protagonist’s loss of self-control due to her disability demonstrated in the auditory imagery “when she tried to play, the music was shrill and out of tune, as if fighting against her”, ANS Q

Furthermore, Ray Bradbury crafts a cautionary tale that warns against the loss of human autonomy and meaning on a societal level, which has been repressed by an implied totalitarian government and the dissipation of human structures in the visual imagery “one house in an entire city of houses that were dark” that “has all of its electric lights brightly lit”. Similarly, I have expressed the “jarring” loss of meaning through the reflective tone describing my persona’s fear of her loss in “She was afraid. Afraid that all her effort was for nothing, that she’d lost the consistent comfort music brought her”.

Finally, my text has been influenced by Bradbury’s use of juxtaposition between his protagonist, Leonard Mead’s “Regressive Tendencies” in his “ten years of walking by day or night” in search of control and meaning, and the depiction of the rest of society through colour imagery, who “sat like the dead”. In my use of juxtaposition, between societal views of the consistency of nature and my protagonist’s dependence on it, reflected in the descriptive language “where others found a monotonous, repetitive struggle, she found comfort - in the sameness of it all”, I have expressed the cleansing effect of nature as a alternative source of comfort for my protagonist.

Ultimately, by drawing upon visual imagery and the juxtaposition used in The Pedestrian, I have effectively conveyed the power of nature as a catalyst for reconciliation and its ability to provide meaning, to _____ provoke/reflect/invite the reader to…
