Creation Flashcards
All approaches to truth begin with certain assumptions that are taken on faith; these must eventually be tested
Presuppositionalism
One starts with certain presuppositions but their presuppositions cannot be tested
Fideism
Allows experience and evidence to have a significant role in the formation of one’s position
Empiricism
A model that attempts to harmonize Scripture and science
Concordist approach
24-hour theory
A concordist approach that says Gen 1 was 6 literally 24-hour days
Gap theory
A concordist approach that says there was an indeterminate amount of time between Gen 1:1 and Gen 1:2. Then, the creation days are literal 24-hour days.
Day-age theory
A concordist approach that says each day in Genesis is an era of time
Promised Land theory
A concordist approach that says the six days of Gen 1 refer to the preparation of the Promised Land - not creation as a whole
A model that takes Scripture on its own terms
Non-concordist approaches
Genesis as myth
A non-concordist approach that views Genesis as a story with details borrowed from previous civilizations’ myths
Genesis as allegory
A non-concordist approach that views Gen 1-3 as a way to present theological truths - humanity is estranged from Creator because of sin
Genesis as literary device
A non-concordist approach that says Gen 1-3 are just a literary structure (3 days to form, 3 days to fill). It fights against the polytheistic beliefs of surrounding cultures
Framework Theory
A common evangelical non-concordist approach. Three days to form, 3 days to fill
