Active exclusion of some things eg Na+ ions Needs protein pump Membrane ATPases use energy in form of atp to pump ions, mass atp production requires oxygen No O2= loss of protein function, ion balance, cells die Cell contents released during death, eg creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase used as indicators of cell death
