Q

Overview

A

Dickens uses the Cratchit family as a vehicle to convey the idea that poverty is not a barrier to happiness, suggesting that resilience, unity and love is what makes a joyful, appreciative family. Additionally, he uses the plight and poverty of the Cratchit’s to shed light upon the lives of the poor in contrast to that of the upper class society in the Victorian era, which he had experienced himself.

Quote 1 + opening

A

In the opening of the novella, Dickens introduces the character of Bob Cratchit, presenting him as a poverty-stricken clerk, with a deep devotion to his family. His caring and considerate nature is evident in the first stave where the narrator states, “The clerk observed that it was only once a year”. This refers to the moment where Bob asks Scrooge for a day off work on Christmas. This depiction immediately establishes Bob as a warm-hearted character, as he is willing to sacrifice a day’s wages to spend precious time with his family, highlighting his priorities and values despite his difficult circumstances.

Quote 3

A

“dressed out but poorly in a twice turned gown, but brave in ribbons” is a reference to the fact that lower class women would wear borrowed clothing which were in poor conditions as they could not afford any better, emphasising the adversity the Cratchit family face. However the adjective “brave” juxtaposes the connotations of the rest of the quote, as it highlights her dignity and courage and suggests she is optimistic regardless of her financial situation.

Quote 6

A

“Bob was very cheerful with them, and spoke pleasently to all the family” He tries to put up a facade around his family, although this opposes his true emotions, to avoid negativity in the environment. This act brings attention to his selfless nature and demonstartes the extent of his care for the others as he is willing to sacrafice his own feelings.
