Trigeminal Nerve (CN V5) Main Responsibility
- Sensation of the face
Trigeminal Nerve (CN V5) Damage
- mastication
- oral phase deficits
- skin sensory loss
- hyolaryngeal movement
- epiglottic inversion
- reside: valleculae, pyriforms
Exam for Trigeminal Nerve (CN V5)
- clench teeth
- swallow
- test 3 face divisions
- open mouth with and without resistance
Facial Nerve (CN VII 7) Main Responsibility
- Motor innervation contralateral lower part of face, bilateral upper part of face
- salivation, sensory/tase anterior 2/3 tongue
- hyolaryngeal excursion
Exam for Facail Nerve (CN VII 7)
- any movement of face
- close eyes
- rasie eyebrows,
- smile
- puff cheeks
- pucker lips
- frown
-taste from anterior 2/3 tongue (sweet, salty, sour)
Glossopharyngeal (CN IX 9) Main Responsibility
- sensory to mucosa posterior tongue and pharynx
- taste posterior 1/3 tongue
- sense arrival of bolus at palate
- gag reflex and palate elevation
Glossopharyngeal Nerve (CN IX 9) Damage
- damage is RARE!
Exam for GlossopharyngealNerve (CN IX 9)
- hot/cold posterior 1/3 tongue
- symmetry and movement of velum
Vagus (CN X 10) Main Responsibility
- innervates palatoglossus, intrinsic pharyngeal and larygneal muscles
- motor gag and swallow reflex
- VP closure
- Very Important!
Exam for Vagus Nerve (CN X 10)
- velar elevatyion during phonation
- velar symmetry
Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve
- responsible for Glottic Closure
Accessory (CN XI 11) Main Responsibility
- Motor nerve for 2 muscles in the neck
- head turn/support
- Assist with VP closure
Exam for Accessory Nerve (CN XI 11)
- shrug shoulders
- move head
Hypoglossla (CN XII 12) Main Responsibility
-innervates tongue muscles
- Motor- powersource of tongue
- anterior hyoid movement
-only nerve with contralateral innervation
