cranial nerve one
cranial nerve one is the olfactory nerve
it’s function is to smell things and process those findings in the diencephalon
cranial nerve two
cranial nerve two is the optic nerve and it’s function is sight/visual (sensory)
cranial nerve three name and function
cranial nerve three is the occulomotor nerve
it’s function is motor, it moves the eye
cranial nerve four name and function
cranial nerve four is the trochlear nerve
Motor- Gross eye movements, rotates eye down and in (superior oblique muscle)
cranial nerve 5 name and function
cranial nerve five is the trigeminal nerve
has both sensory and motor function:
Motor- Mastication muscles
Sensory- Cornea, skin of face, head, and tongue
cranial nerve 6 name and function
cranial nerve 6 is the abducens nerve
Motor- Gross eye movement rotates eye outward (lateral rectus muscle)
cranial nerve 7 name and function
Motor- Facial muscles, eyelids
Sensory- Taste of anterior 2/3 of tongue
Parasymp- lacrimal, nasal, and submaxillary glands
cranial nerve 7 is the facial nerve
cranial nerve 8 name and function
cranial nerve 8 is the vestibulocochlear (acoutsic) nerve
Cochlear branch- Sensory for hearing
Vestibular branch- for balance
cranial nerve 9 name and function
cranial nerve 9 is the glossopharyngeal
Motor- pharynx, swallowing
Sensory- taste on posterior 1/3 of tongue, carotid sinus
cranial nerve 10 name and function
Motor- pharynx, larynx
Sensory- viscera, skin, behind ear
Parsymp- heart & viscera
cranial nerve 10 is the vagus nerve
cranial nerve 11 name and function
cranial nerve 11 is the spinal accessory
Motor- sternocleidomastoid & trapezius muscles
cranial nerve 12 name and function
Motor- tongue
cranial nerve 12 is the hypoglossal nerve
