Cranial Nerve 1-
Olfactory, smell spices
Cranial nerve 2
Optic, pupillary light reflex and visual field lesions
Cranial nerve 3
Oculomotor, follow pen
Cranial nerve 4
Trochlear, follow pen
Cranial nerve 5
Trigeminal, clench teeth and massage masseter muscles, touch person with paper clip, touch cornea with cotton
Cranial nerve 6
Abducens, follow pen
Cranial nerve 7
Facial nerve, raise eyebrows, close eyes again resistance, manipulate smile or frown up or down and check for asymmetry
Cranial nerve 8
Vestibulocochlear, Weber test with tuning fork
Cranial nerve 9
Glossopharyngeal, ask to swallow or gag
Cranial nerve 10
Vagus, ask to swallow or gag
Cranial nerve 11
Accessory, turn head against resistance, raise shoulder against resistance
Cranial nerve 12
Hypoglossal, press tongue against cheek and look for symmetry
Patellar reflex
Have patient sit in chair with dangling leg and tap the patellar ligament sharply with reflex hammer just below the knee, there should be a sudden leg extension, and the muscles that contract are the quadriceps
Biceps reflex
Hood patients flexed arm in the palm of your hand with your thumb over the antecubital space and strike your thumb with the hammer, the fire arm should flex at the elbow, and the muscles that contact are the biceps brachii
Calcaneal reflex
With shoe removed grasp the ankle and slightly dorsiflex the ankle then sharply tap the calcaneal tendon with the reflex hammer, the foot should jerk toward the plantar surface, and the gastrocnemius muscle contracts
Crossed extensor reflex
Patient sits eyes closed with the palm of their hand facing up. Poke with a sharp pencil and see what happens, the side where it’s getting poked should push away while the opposite arm extends
Plantar reflex
Take a blunt object and use to heel to toes, the toes should flex down, it involves the soleus, gastrocnemius and plantaris
Pupillary reflex
Using a pen light dim the lights and shine the pen light in the subjects left and right pupils and measure the width, both pupils (including the one not having light shined in the eye) should constrict. And it uses the iris sphincter muscle
Ciliospinal reflex
Using normal lighting use your finger to gently stroke the hairs on the left side of the back of the neck close to the hairline, the ipsipilateral side will dilate while the contra lateral will not, and it uses the iris sphincter muscles
Salivary reflex
Place lemon juice or an acid on the tongue, this should release a high rate of saliva,
Learned reflex’s (ruler drop)
Ruler drop- position a ruler of the side of a table and have them grab it as you drop it. Should get better with time
What is a reflex
An involuntary and sudden response to stimuli
Autonomic reflexes
Parasympathetic or sympathetic reflex- no control
Somatic reflex
All reflexes involving the skeletal muscle
Reflex arc
Pathway by which a reflex travels
