Some Say Money Matters, But My Brother Says Big Brains Matter More
Terminal Nerve
Pheromone detection and sexual development.`
Olfactory Nerve
Nerve I, olfaction, sensory`
Optic Nerve
Nerve II, vision, sensory
Oculomotor Nerve
Nerve III, Motor Innervates 4 extraocular muscles: Superior rectus Inferior Rectus Medial Rectus Inferior oblique Innervates levator palpebrae (keeps eyelid up) Innervates iris constrictor
Trochlear Nerve
Nerve IV, Motor
Innervates superior oblique muscle (looking inferiorly, maintaining horizontal horizon)
Receives input from vestibulocochlear nerve and cerebellum
Trigeminal Nerve
Nerve V, Both
Innervates muscles of mastication (chewing)
Sensory for face, tongue, teeth, and cornea
Cutaneous sensation for the meninges
3 branches: V1, V2, V3
Abducens Nerve
Nerve VI, Motor
Innervates the lateral rectus muscle (causes abduction)
Facial Nerve
Nerve VII, Both
Non verbal communication
Innervates muscles of facial expression and lacrimal gland and obicularis occuli
Branches span the entire face
Sensory for taste (gustation), anterior 2/3 of tongue
Vestibulocochlear Nerve
Nerve VIII, Sensory
Two nerves combined
Hearing (cochlear) and balance (vestibular)
Glossopharyngeal Nerve
Nerve IX, Both
Motor for for swallowing (deglutition) muscles + tongue
Motor for salivary glands
Sensory taste, posterior 1/3 of tongue
Visceral sensory for carotid sinus/bodies
Vagus Nerve
Nerve X, Both Parasympathetic innervation to thoracic and abdominal viscera Motor control to larynx Motor control to viscera Sensory to tragus and meatus (ear hole) Sensory to aortic arch Sensory taste (throat and epiglottis)
Accessory Nerve
Nerve XI, Motor
Actually a spinal nerve, C1-C6
Somatic motor for head turning muscles (neck)
Hypoglossal Nerve
Nerve XII, Motor
Intrinsic and extrinsic muscles below the tongue
Reflexes
Pupillary light: dilation and constriction of the pupil
Glabellar reflex: twitching up of the facial muscles when the glabella is tapped, lost after childhood, can return if there is neurological damage
Vestibulo-ocular reflex:
Nystagmus - following a moving object until you can’t and then quickly locking onto a new one
Cold water sprays into ear - eyes twitch side to side mimicking nystagmus, balance is lost
