Cranial nerves most relevant for swallow
V- trigeminal - controls muscles for biting and chewing, sensation for most of face
VII - Facial - taste (2/3 front) controls muscles of face/lips - if damaged cant seal lips, food spillage, cant open jaw well. cant masticate
IX - glossopharyngeal - sensation on tongue, pharynx and soft palate (taste (1/3 back)decreased gaga reflex, dry mouth, slavation reducee, weak cough reflex
X - Vagus (sensation of larynx, backof tongue and pharynx muscles - difficulty swallowing, nasal regurgittion, lost gag reflex (cant protect airway)hoarse voice, inability to vary pitch.
XII - hypoglossal (tongue muscles -if damaged tongue curves towards the damaged side. cant position tongue well. food gets left in cheek pockets)
