Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Facial N. (CN VII)
Functions
SVE: motor innervation to muscles of facial expression (PA 2)
GVE: PS innervation to lacrimal, nasal, palatine glands/submandibular and sublingual salivary glands
SVA: Taste to anterior 2/3 of tongue
GSA: sensation to external auditory meatus
Facial n. Tract
Pontine-medullary jxn — transverses posterior cranial — exits skull @ internal acoustic meatus — runs in facial canal and exits via stylomastoid foramen — passes through parotid gland
Vestibulocochlear (CN VIII)
Function
SSA: special sense of hearing and equilibrium
Vestibulocochlear n. tract
Vestibular n innervates utricle/saccule
Cochlear n innervates cochlea
Enters skull via internal acoustic meatus — enters Brainstem on pontine-medullary jxn
Glossopharyngeal n. (CN IX)
Functions
GSA: sensation from ear to external auditory canal/posterior 1/3 of tongue
GVA: sensory info from oropharynx and carotid body
SVA: taste to posterior 1/3 of tongue
GVE: PS to parotid gland
SVE: motor to stylopharyngeus ms. (PA 3)
Glossopharyngeal n. Tract
Emerges from medulla — exits cranium through jugular foramen — passes b/w sup/middle pharyngeal constrictors — enters oral cavity
Vagus n (CN X) Functions
GSA: sensation from external auditory canal and dura
GVA: sensory info from viscera, pharynx, larynx, aortic arch, epiglottis and base of tongue
SVA: taste from epiglottis
GVE: PS to viscera
SVE: motor to constrictors of pharynx, palatine ms., intrinsic m of larynx (PA 4 & 6)
Vagus n tract
Emerges from medulla — exits cranium through jugular foramen
Spinal accessory n (CN XI)
Function
GSE: motor to SCM and trapezius
Spinal accessory (CN XI) Tract
Emerges from spinal cord — enters cranium through foramen magnum — exits skull through jugular foramen
Hypoglossal n (CN XII) Function
GSE: motor to intrinsic tongue ms. And styloglossus, hypoglossus and genioglossus
Hypoglossal n. Tract
Emerges from medulla — exits skull via hypoglossal canal — travels with cervical plexus — crosses occipital a. — enters oral cavity
