2. V1 - superior orbital fissure, V2 - Forament rotundum, V3 - Foramen ovale
3. sensory and motor
4. V1 - scalp, forehead and nose (sensory), V2 - cheeks, lower eye lid, nasal mucosa, upper lip, upper teeth and palate, V3 - sensation from anterior 2/3 tongue, skin over mandible and lower teeth, motor of muscles of mastication
5. motor - ask patient to open mouth then clench teeth. repeat mouth opening against resistance. feel over masseter and temporalis when they clench their teeth.
sensory - test sensation (cotton wool then neurotip) in forehead, medial aspect of cheek and chin on both sides of face.

- sensation to external part of ear, taste from anterior 2/3 tongue, hard and soft palate. Muscles of facial expression. Lacrimal, submandibular, sublingual glands and mucous glands of mouth and nose
- ask patient to frown, screw up eyes (repeat against resistance), puff out cheeks and show teeth

smooth muscles of pharynx, larync and most of GIT. most muscles of pharynx and larynx

Accessory

- trapezius, sternocleidomastoid, a few fibres run with CN X to viscera
- Ask patient to shrug shoulders, turn chin to left and right. Repeat against resisitance

Hypoglossal
1. Medulla oblongata (anterior to olive)
2. hypoglossal canal
3. motor
4. intrinsic and extrinsic tongue muscles (except palatoglossus)
5. ask patient to open mouth - look for wasting/fasciculation in mouth.
stick tongue out and look for deviation from midline
