Motor: facial expression; stapedius muscle (reduce loud sounds); posterior part digastric muscle (important for speech, swallowing and breathing).

Sensory: taste anterior 2/3 of the tongue; sensation small region near the external auditory meatus (ear canal).

Parasympathetic: tear glands; salivary glands.

Glossopharyngeal nerve

Motor: stylopharyngeus muscle (elevation larynx and pharynx).

Sensory: taste and sensation of posterior 1/3 of the tongue; sensation from middle ear, region near the auditory meatus and pharynx; chemo- and baroreceptors of carotid body.

Parasympathetic: parotid gland (saliva).
