Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Which two cranial nerves are not true cranial nerves
Olfactory and optic
Where do the cranial nerves that have motor function take origin
Collection of cells deep within the brain stem (analogous to anterior horn cells)
Which cranial nerve has contralateral innervation in the lower part of the nuclei
Cranial nerve 7
Unilateral CN 5,7 and 8
Cerebellopontine angle lesion
Unilateral CN 3, 4, 5 and 6
Cavernous sinus lesion
Combined unilateral CN 9, 10 and 11
Jugular foramen syndrome
Combined bilateral CN 10, 11 and 12
If lower motor neuron: bulbar palsy
If upper motor neuron: pseudobulbar
It’s common cause of intrinsic brain stem lesion in a younger patient
Multiple sclerosis
Most common cause of intrinsic brain stem in an older patient
Vascular disease
Where do the sensory nuclei develop
Within. The dorsal or alar plate of the neuro tube
Where do the motor nuclei develop
Within basal plate
Olfactory nerve exams
- Observation of external nose
- Observation of internal nasal passage
- Check sense of smell by testing each side let seperatly and with seperate scents
Optic nerve exams
- Observation of eyes( limbus to lid limbus to canthi)
- Test visual acuity(snellen chart)
- Test gross visual field(peripheral vision)
- Pupillary light reflex
- Ophthalmoscopic exam
Oculomotor, trochlear, and abducens exams
- Observation of eyes
- Cornmeal light reflex
- Pupillary light reflex
- 6 Cardinal fields of gaze
Trigeminal nerve exams
- Cornmeal blink reflex
- Light touch sensation on the face
- Sharp sensation on the face
- Inspect muscles of mastication for tone and strength
- Jaw jerk reflex
- General sensation of the anterior 2/3 of the tongue
