Sensory; responsible for sense of smell
II Optic Nerves
Sensory; carries visual information
III The Oculomotor Nerves
Motor; moves the eye and raises the upper eyelid
IV The Trochlear Nerves
Motor; moves the eye down and to the side
V The Trigeminal Nerves
Sensory and motor; sensory information from head and face, motor control over the muscles of mastication
VI The Abducens Nerves
Motor; enables abduction of the eye
VII The Facial Nerves
Sensory and motor; sensation from face, taste information and controls the superficial muscles of the scalp and face, deep muscles of the ear
VIII The Vestibulocochlear Nerves
Sensory; hearing and balance
IX The Glossopharyngeal Nerves
Sensory and motor; Carries sensory information from the pharynx and soft palate, provides taste, monitors blood pressure and dissolved gas in the carotids; controls pharyngeal muscles involved in swallowing, the parotid salivary gland of the cheek
X Vagus
Sensory and motor; provides visceral sensation, baroreceptors, chemoreceptors; controls swallowing and the digestive, respiratory, and cardiovascular systems
XI The Accessory Nerves
Motor; voluntary swallowing, vocal cords, sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles
XII The Hypoglossal Nerves
Motor; controls voluntary movements of the tongue
