Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Olfactory Nerve (I)
Sensory: Olfaction
Optic Nerve (II)
Sensory: Vision
Oculomotor (III)
Motor: Voluntary: superior rectus, medial rectus, inferior rectus, inferior oblique, and levator palpebrae superioris
Motor: Involuntary: sphincter pupillae muscle of Iris (constricts pupil)
Sensory: Proprioception: detection of skeletal muscle location, contraction, etc.
Trochlear (IV)
Motor: voluntary to superior oblique
sensory: proprioception
Trigeminal (v)
Sensory: Cutaneous receptor (tough, temp, pain) of face; surface of eye, surface of tounge, lining of mouth, lining of nose, teeth and external ear. Proprioception
Motor: voluntary muscles of mastication
Abducens (VI)
motor: abducts the eye, voluntary to lateral rectus
sensory: proprioception
Facial (VII)
Sensory: Taste on anterior 2/3 of tongue, proprioception,
Motor: voluntary controls skeletal muscle in the face, involuntary to lacrimal, nasal, and submandiular (salivary), and sublingual (salivary) glands
Vestibulocochlear (VIII)
Sensory: hearing and equilibrium
Glossopharyngeal (IX)
Sensory: taste from the posterior 1/3 of tounge, proprioception
Motor: voluntary to pharynx, swallowing-control of smooth muscle, involuntary to parotid (salivary) gland
Vagus (X)
Sensory: stretch receptors and pain receptors in the walls of organs in thorax and abdomen, proprioception: skeletal muscle position
Motor: voluntary to pharynx (swallowing), and larynx (phonation, sound, voicebox), involuntary: regulates contraction of smooth muscle and gland secretion of the organs in the thorax and abdomen and controls the heart muscle
Accessory (XI)
Cranial portion: motor: voluntary to pharynx (swallowing) and larynx (phonation and sound); sensory: proprioception
Spinal portion: motor: voluntary to trapezius and sternoclediomastiod; sensory-proprioception
Hypoglossal (XII)
Motor: voluntary to the tongue muscles, swallowing and speech
Sensory: proprioception
