Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Cranial Nerve 1
Olfactory
Cranial Nerve 1 - Foramen
Cribriform Plate (Ethmoid Bone)
Cranial Nerve 1 - Function
Sensory Information about Olfaction is sent to the Olfactory complex of the Temporal lobe (Piriform Cortex).
Cranial Nerve 2
Optic
Cranial Nerve 2 Foramen
Optic Canal
Cranial Nerve 2 Function
the retina sends Sensory fibers to the thalamus—1/2 cross-optic chiasm. They are relayed to the lateral geniculate nucleus. Then to calcarine fissure.
Cranial Nerve 3
Oculomotor
Cranial Nerve 3- foramen
Superior Orbital Fissure
Cranial Nerve 3 - Function
The oculomotor nucleus in the midbrain sends fibers to 5/7 extraocular muscles except Lateral Rectus and Superior Oblique
Cranial Nerve 3- Parasympathetic
Edinger Westphal nucleus sends tracts traveling through the III cranial nerve where it reaches the ciliary ganglion. From there it acts upon the ciliary body and construction of the pupil.
Cranial Nerve 4
Trochlear
Cranial Nerve 4 Foramen
Superior Orbital Fissure
Cranial Nerve 4 Function
The Trochlear Nucleus in the midbrain sends motor fibers to the superior oblique muscles.
Cranial Nerve 5
Trigeminal
Cranial Nerve 5 Function
V1-Opthalamic - Sensory information to Upper face
V2-Maxillary - Sensory Information to Middle Face/Nose and Upper Teeth
V3- Mandibular - Sensory Information to Lower face and lower teeth and anterior 2/3 of tongue.
Motor Information to the muscles of mastication
Cranial Nerve 5 Foramen
V1-Opthalamic - Superior Orbital Fissure
V2-Maxillary- Foramen Rotundum
V3- Mandibular- Foramen Ovale
Cranial Nerve 6
Abducens
Cranial Nerve 6 Function
Motor neurons travel from abducens nucleus in pons to the lateral rectus muscle of the extraocular muscles
Cranial Nerve 6 Foramen
Superior Orbital Fissure
Cranial Nerve 7
Facial
Cranial Nerve 7 Function
Sensory information is obtained for taste from the anterior 2/3 of the tongue, motor information is sent to the muscles of facial expression.
Cranial Nerve 7 Foramen
Internal Acoustic Meatus
Cranial Nerve 7 parasympatetic
Starting in the Superior Salivatory nucleus singlas travel through the 7th cranial nerve to reach the pterygopalatine ganglion or the submandibular ganglion. Fibers then either go to the lacrimal/nasal glands or the submandibular/sublingual glands.
Cranial Nerve 8
Vestobucochlear
Cranial Nerve 8 Function
Sensory information from the cochlea and semicircular canals is sent to pons. Then are sent to the Medial Geniculate Nucleus which relays information to the superior temporal gyrus.
Cranial Nerve 8 Foramen
Internal Acoustic Meatus
Cranial Nerve 9
Glossopharyngeal
Cranial Nerve 9 Function
Sensory information from general taste and sensory information in the posterior 1/3 of the tongue. Motor information is sent to muscles of the pharynx
Cranial Nerve 9 Foramen
Jugular Foramen
Cranial Nerve 9 Parasympathetic
Starting at the inferior salivatory nucleus in the medulla they target the otic ganglion from there they go on to target the parotid gland
Cranial Nerve 10
Vagus
Cranial Nerve 10 Function
Both sensory information in the head, neck, thorax, and pelvis, as the motor fibers target the larynx and pharynx
Cranial Nerve 10 Foramen
Jugular Foramen
Cranial Nerve 10 Parasympathetic
Starting in the Dorsal Motor Nuclei fibers travel down the vagus nerve to innervate structures like bronchi, heart, stomach, intestines
Cranial Nerve 11
Spinal Accessory
Cranial Nerve 11 Function
Motor information travels from the cervical spinal cord to the muscles sternocleidomastoid and Trapezius.
Cranial Nerve 11Foramen
Jugular Foramen
Cranial Nerve 12
Hypoglossal
Cranial Nerve 12 Function
Motor information travels from hypoglossal nucleus in pons to the muscles of the tongue
Cranial Nerve 12 Foramen
Hypoglossal canal
