Cranial nerves Flashcards
what cranial nerves have parasympathetic innervation?
3,7,9,10
function of CN I
special sense- smell (chemoreception)
function of CN II
special sense-vision (photoreception)
function of cranial nerve III
4/6 mm of eye movement
mm: superior rectus, inferior rectus, medial rectus, and inferior oblique
PARASYMPATHETIC: constrict the pupil
function of CN IV
1/6 eye mm
MM: trochlear
what is the function of cranial nerve V
SENSORY AND MOTOR
sensory (V1, V2, V3)
v1- top of face
v2- middle of face and upper teeth
v3- bottom of face and lower teeth
motor (V3)
muscles of mastication
what is the function of cranial nerve VI
1/6 eye mm
MM: lateral rectus
what is the function of CN VII
muscles of facial expression
motor: PARASYMPATHETIC
sensory: special sense taste in anterior 2/3 of tongue (chemoreception)
what is bells palsy
paralysis of CN VII
lead to taste disturbance as well as dry mouth/eye
discuss CN VII pathway
int acoustic meatus through the temporal bone then it divides one goes through the stylomastoid foramen in which it becomes the 5 branches (Temporal, Zygomatic, Buccal, Mandibular, and Cervical) these are what innervate the muscles of facial expression. THE OTHER (chorda tympani) goes through the middle ear to the oral cavity ro the ant 2/3 of the tongue for special sense of taste
what are the 5 divisions of the facial nerve
Temporal
Zygomatic
Buccal
Mandibular
Cervical
function of CN VIII
special sense of hearing and equilibrium (mechanoreceptors)
what is the function of CN IX
MOTOR: PARASYMPATHETIC: parotid salivary gland as well as MM: stylopharyngeus M.
SENSORY: special sense, taste in the posterior 1/3 of the tongue
AND general sense to the posterior 1/3 of the tongue and pharynx
what is the function of CN X
Motor: MM of pharynx and larynx
PARASYMPATHETIC: thorax and abdomen
Sensory: General sense: epiglottis and lower pharynx
what is the function of CN XI
MM: sternocleidomastoid and trapezius
what is the function of CN XII
MM: tongue
